Setting up for the classic spring time Sturgeon fishing on Rainy River. I’m starting to get some items put together to chase these old dinosaurs! The fun part about this is that it can be a truly inexpensive adventure when it comes to gear. Starting with the size of weight, you will need to pay attention to the current and it’s strength. When the current really starts rippin’ you may have to use a weight as heavy as 8oz! Typical weights will vary from 3oz to 5oz on most trips. Using a Muskie or Northern rod typically works best (heavy rod), paired with some 80lb Power Pro fishing line, and a 5/0 hook… bam! You have all of the components you need to go out and be successful. I will be fishing in a Rainy River Sturgeon tournament in a couple of weeks. I will report back with where I landed in the results along with how we set up. If you would like to book a trip to hit up the Sturgeon fishing on Rainy River (aka chase these dinosaurs) this year or in the future, reach out to me through the contact page at Northern Water Excursions LLC – Rainy Lake Guiding, Tours, or Training (northernexcursion.com) and we will get you set up for a trip of a lifetime.
